Ye have overcome the wicked one

1 John 2:12-13

I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abide in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

I write unto you ... because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.   Romans 5:8 says “But God commend his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”   Salvation is the manifestation of the love of God and the purpose of salvation is to bring glory to God.  Our sins are forgiven us for HIS names sake.  That God would manifest — his love, his mercy ,his amazing grace toward us who believe.  To God be the glory for things that he has done.

because ye have known him that is from the beginning.

Jesus said this is life eternal:  to know him the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he hath sent.

known him that is from the beginning. Jesus is from the beginning.  The gospel of John starts out with “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shine in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

ye have overcome the wicked one — we do not war against flesh and blood.  We battle against the wicked one.  In John 8:44 Jesus says to those who did not believe on him “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speak a lie, he speak of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”    God is light and truth, the devil is darkness and lies.  In Christ we have overcome the wicked one.

ye are strong, and the word of God abide in you — we cannot know God apart from his word and his word is to abide in us. remain in us, dwell in us.   The Lord is our strength, are ever present help in times of trouble.  Ephesians 6 says “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”   The only way to stand against the wiles of the devil is to stand in the Lord — he in me, I in him and his Word in me — and the power of his might.

ye are strong, and the word of God abide in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one!
