Why was Jesus able to perform miracles?

John 5:19-24

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he see the Father do: for what things soever he do, these also do the Son likewise. For the Father love the Son, and show him all things that himself do: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raise up the dead, and quicken them; even so the Son quicken whom he will.  For the Father judge no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honor not the Son honor not the Father which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hear my word, and believe on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:19-24

The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he see the Father do.   Jesus had begun to perform miracles.  He turned water into wine, healed the sick, caused the blind to see and the lame to get up an walk.  He refers to God as “my father” and makes it clear that he can do nothing on his own — its the father who does the works.

He says later in John 10 “Believe thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwell in me, he do the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.”

We read in Hebrews 1 that in these last days God has spoken unto us by his Son.  And in this verse we just read Jesus says “I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwell in me”. And what is he speaking, what is he teaching?

That Son and the Father are one.

The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he see the Father do

• And he points to LOVE: the Father love the Son, and show him all things that himself do: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

For as the Father raise up the dead, and quicken them; even so the Son quicken whom he will.  The Son, Jesus, has been given the authority to give life to whom he will.  Jesus said: “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever* ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.” John 15:16

“For the Father judge no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father.”  We cannot say we believe in God apart from believing in his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

The relationship of the Father and the Son are essential to the Gospel.

• We hear a lot of talk of God but as Christians, we cannot talk of God apart from Jesus.  He that honor not the Son honor not the Father which hath sent him.

• And what about Jesus?     “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hear my word, and believe on him that sent me, hath  everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”

• What did Jesus teach about himself and the father and everlasting life in just these few verses?   Take some time to meditate on them, write down Jesus Words and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you and give you understanding.

God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved.   Saved, because we have a Sin problem and we already stand condemned. “He that believe on him is not condemned: but he that believe not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

condemn means to pronounce guilty : CONVICT  And as Romans 6:23 says “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Thank you Lord, that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.  In Christ we have both forgiveness and deliverance from Sin and receive the gift of eternal life.  And if we continue in your word, then are we your disciples indeed and we shall know the truth and the truth will make us free.

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 10:11
