Walk in the Light

1 John 1:5-10

This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanse us from all sin.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

There is a lot of darkness in this world — would you agree?  But God is light and in him is no darkness at all.

If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. The proof is in our walk.   If I believe on Jesus then I believe that I’m a sinner in need of a Savior and have received repentance and the remission of sins.  There is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents.  If I’ve received repentance then I’m going to turn away from darkness to light.  From the lies of the enemy to the truth.  If someone says they have believed on Jesus and yet they are continuing to walk in darkness, then John says it very plainly here “they lie”.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanse us from all sin.  Forgiven, cleanses, washed clean — our sin has been atoned for by the blood of Christ and our guilt is taken away.  There is therefore no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.  As believers we have fellowship with one another because we have fellowship in Christ.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

• When we believe on Jesus we receive the forgiveness and remission of sins but we will still sin.  I used to feel so guilty when the Spirit convicted me of sin — why did I say that, why did I do that?  Sometimes I would spend a whole lot of time trying to figure out exactly what it is that I did, what my sin was exactly.  This verse has been so freeing to me.  When the Spirit makes me aware that I have sinned, I now know exactly what to do with it.

◦ Confess my sins to Lord.  And by faith receive his forgiveness and ask him to cleanse me from all unrighteousness.

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his Word is not in us. I guess its as simple as that.

To deny that we have sin is to deny the love of God and the tremendous price he paid to save us from our sin.  “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
