The abiding life.

1 John 2:24-25

Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

Do you have your bible opened?  Take a moment and look at this verse.  How many times do you see the word IN?  What is this one verse talking about?  What is it describing?  Look up the definition of abide and remain and think about what that means, what it looks like.

Jesus described this abiding life in John chapter 15.  He gave us a visual of what it looks like.  Please turn in your bibles to John 15 and we’re going to read verses 1-8:

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that bear not fruit he take away: and every branch that bear fruit, he purge it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abide in me, and I in him, the same bring forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.

• Can a branch bear fruit, any fruit apart from the vine?  No.  No fruit.

• Can you bear any fruit apart from abiding in Christ, he in you and his words in you?  No.  No fruit.

• Or rather, can any fruit be produced through you?  Because the branch doesn’t produce the fruit, the branch simply abides in the vine.

Friend, have you been listening to teaching that teaches we are to do for God?   That is not the teaching of Christ and its not truth.  You and I can do nothing for God.  What has Jesus said?  “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”  As we abide in Christ and his word abides in us, the Spirit bears the fruit.  The fruit of the Spirit.

If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

Jesus said:  this is life eternal to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he hath sent.  To know him is to know what he has said, what he has taught, what he has promised.  Do you know him?

Are you worried about your life?  Do you take thought to your life?  What has  Jesus said in Matthew 6?  He says that we are free to take no thought our life.  He shares how our heavenly Father cares for the birds of the air and the lilies of the field and then he says “are ye not much more valuable than they?”  He tells us what we are to do instead of taking thought to our life and he also gives us the promise of what our heavenly Father will do for us.  Have read his teaching?  Even more, have you known this to be true in your own life?  Spend some time lingering in Matthew 6:24-34 and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you  and give you understanding.  He will.

Your heavenly father and Jesus Christ cares for you, he loves you.  “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”  John 15:13  Get to know him in his word.
