Forgiven much.

1 John 2:7-11

Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shine.

He that saith he is in the light, and hate his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that love his brother abide in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hate his brother is in darkness, and walk in darkness, and know not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

The darkness is past, and the true light now shine. A while back we looked at the story of the woman who was caught in adultery and about to be stoned to death. As you may remember, just before she was about to be stoned, Jesus had stooped down and wrote in the sand.  And then he lifted up his head and said one line,  just one line “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone at her”.  And one by one each one, convicted by their own conscience, walked away.  And then Jesus said to this woman, “Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”

• Good news!  The darkness is past and the true light now shine.  As Jesus said;  “I am the light of the world: he that follow me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

He that say he is in the light, and hate his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that love his brother abide in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.   This woman was guilty and she knew she was guilty.  The law said the punishment for adultery was to be stoned to death.   After all her accusers walked away and Jesus said to her “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more” — can you imagine how relieved she was?   Thankful.  She had just received Gods great love and mercy, would she then turn around and hate her brother?     In Luke 7 Jesus is sharing about two debtors and gives an example of another woman.  He says in verse 47  “Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same love little.”   He that has been forgiven much, loves much.

But he that hate his brother is in darkness, and walk in darkness, and know not where he go, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.   If someone has not love then they know not the love of God in Christ and the love of God is not in them.

The more we grow in Christ, the more the love of God is perfected in us and the more we will love others by pointing them to the Savior, Christ the Lord.  He that has been forgiven much, loves much.  Walk in the light as he is in the light and turn away from darkness.
