Confident in who I am!

2 Peter 1:1-2

Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ: Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

There is so much wisdom in these two verses.

Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ — that’s who Peter is.  He is not defined by what he does but by whom he belongs to.  Peter is a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ.

• If I say I’m a servant, well that doesn’t sound very impressive.  But I am Lynne, a bond-Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.  I belong to him.  The Alpha and the Omega.  The great I AM.  That’s whom I belong to.  The king of kings and Lord of Lords.  My identity and confidence is found in Christ alone.

• A number of weeks ago we looked at the story of David and Goliath.  While the Israelite army was terrified of the great warrior, David’s response was “who is this Philistine that defies the army of the living God?” What made the army great?  It was the army of the living God.

• And when king Saul asked David why he thought he could possibly go and fight this giant his response was:  “And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.”

• I am Lynne a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ.  I have no confidence in myself but I have 100% confidence in the Lord.

• The next part of verse 1 says: to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.

• a definition of obtain says succeed — which means to pass to a person by inheritance.   To inherit rank or title or position.

• If you have believed on Jesus as Lord, then you have received the title, position of belonging to him.  it is by the grace of God you have received like and precious faith through the righteousness of God and our Savior Jesus Christ.”  As Jesus said “you have not chosen me but I have chosen you”.

• What a wonderful peace and assurance this gives us.  Saved by grace not of works. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”  Ephesians 2:8-9

• Its far better to be chosen then to choose — think about that.  Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.  I was lost and now I’m found, I was blind but now I see.

• And the end of verse 2 says:  Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

• How are grace and peace multiplied unto us?  Through the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.  Jesus said:  and this is life eternal, that we might know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom he hath sent.

• How do we grow in knowing him?  Through his Word.  Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
