Amazing Grace!

There’s a song I grew up with in church that says “I have decided to follow Jesus” ... is this true?  Do we decide to follow Jesus?  Do we make a decision for Christ? If you have a Bible please turn to John 15 and we’re going to read verses 16-17 ....

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.”

Jesus said you have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you.  How important is this to understand?  Ephesians 2:9 says “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Look at the testimony of John Newton, the former slave ship captive who wrote the words to amazing grace ...

Amazing Grace, How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost, but now am found

T'was blind but now I see

T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear

And Grace, my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed

The hour he first believed.  Why did he believe? John Newton was a slave ship captain.  The cargo in his ship was human beings.  He knew from his own conscience the evil that he was a part of.  But by the grace of God he was given eyes to see.  And just as the apostle Paul cried out in Romans 7, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”   John Newton’s eyes were opened to see he was a sinner in desperate need of a Savior.  His testimony is in the words of the song he wrote, listen to these first few verses again ...
