What does it mean to believe on Jesus?

Welcome to the first day of our Bible study and I’m so glad that you’ve joined me.  Today we’re going to take a look at what it means to believe on Jesus.  So if you have a bible, please turn to John 8 and we’re going to first take a look at verse 30 …

“As he spake these words, many believed on him.”  Many believed on Jesus because they heard his words, his teaching.  What was he teaching?

John 8:1-11 “Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”

Now lets turn to John 3 looking at verses 16-18 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  He that believe on him is not condemned: but he that believe not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world — just as Jesus said to the woman “neither do I condemn thee”.  God sent his Son into the world that the world through him might be saved.

What does it mean to believe in Jesus?  It means that by the grace of God you have been given eyes to see that you’re a sinner in need of a Savior.  You cannot be saved unless you first see that you need saving.  You cannot be forgiven unless you first see that you are in need forgiveness.  Jesus said in Luke 15:7 that "joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repent, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.”   Are you a righteous person who needs no forgiveness. or are you a sinner in need of a Savior?
